Job Summary:     The Senior Director of the Exceptional Childrens Program, provides leadership to the local educational agency programs for exceptional childrens programs. The role includes the ability to motivate, influence, and shape individuals in order to assure continuous organizational development and improvement. Indicators of competency fall in the areas of leadership, planning and improving curriculum and instruction, policy and procedures, community relations, personnel practices, and fiscal management. The Senior Director, Exceptional Childrens Programs, is part of the local leadership team and works under the general supervision of the superintendent or designee. The Senior Director maintains a cooperative relationship with the principals, other school personnel, other related service agencies, and parents. The overall responsibility of the Senior Director is to administer the exceptional childrens program with local, state, and federal guidelines, rules, regulations and laws. 

 

Qualifications:

• Must hold or be eligible to obtain a valid NC Exceptional Childrens Program Director License.
• Valid NC Licensure in Special Education/Exceptional Children 
• Five years of experience as a program administrator or specialist, preferred 
• Other qualifications as the superintendent and board may find appropriate.

 

Reports to:  Associate Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction

 

Supervises: Instructional and/or Support Personnel

 

Terms of Employment: 12 months

 

 Duties and Responsibilities:  

 

• Administer and supervise assigned special education programs for all areas of exceptionalities. 
• Provide effective leadership in developing and implementing a curriculum that will facilitate the optimal development of disabled students, ages three to twenty-one.  
• Coordinate services for children with special needs that meet local, state, and federal guidelines, rules, regulations, and laws. 
• Supervise the Exceptional Childrens support team inclusive of the Compliance Specialists, Behavior Specialist, EC Pre-K Coordinator, Pre-School Coordinator and other staff
• Collect, interpret and prepare data for continuous program improvement.
• Assure procedures are followed for students receiving services in the Exceptional Childrens Department. 
• Manage, prepare, submit and monitor state and federal budgets related to the Exceptional Childrens Program. 
• Select curriculum materials appropriate to meet the needs indicated in the Individualized Education Program (IEP). 
• Meet with representatives from regional offices and DPI to discuss policies and procedures governing students with special needs.  
• Prepare reports as requested regarding the Exceptional Childrens Program.
• Assist principals with personnel and parent issues within the school that disrupt the instructional arena. 
• Schedule and organize professional development for teachers. 
• Collaborate with community mental health agencies in providing services for children with special needs. 
• Meet with IEP Chairpersons to provide technical support. 
• Serve as Section 504 and ADA Coordinator for the school system. 
• Supervise and coordinate exceptional children data for required headcounts and other Indicator reports as required by DPI.
• Other duties as assigned by the Administration.
